Does American Airlines have good rewards
Is American Airlines Rewards Comprehensive?
Today, American Airlines manages the largest frequent flyer program in the world, with more than 100 million participants. The AAdvantage program has been in existence since early 1981. Well, that goes for over 40 years and I have worked in an industry where loyalty programs are temporary.
Advantage’s rewards for their members are proper and worthy of such reverence.
Earning Miles
First, this work will look at the factors that make it easy for one to be awarded AAdvantage miles. Unlike several other countries, including Canada and most of Europe, America awards miles based on the ticket price instead of the distance flown. Usually, 5 miles is earned for every dollar spent on flight or flight-related products within the United States and Canada. However, the earning rate is slightly higher if you book international flights and premium cabin tickets.
This earning structure is standard and in line with the industry. Other major U. S. airlines generally have similar rates for mileage-based earnings. However, some LCCs, such as Southwest, have a rewards program where points are earned based on the number of segments flown and not on cost. In that regard, America’s earning rate can be considered rather balanced, but not very high.
America also makes it easy to accumulate these miles via partnerships. The possibilities are endless; you can earn miles on over 1000 partners that range from hotels and car rentals to retailers, credit cards, and others. Once again, this is not a typical American dish but rather helpful to improve your BBT level.
Using Miles
Well, let’s continue talking about ways to use AAdvantage miles. The American states that its MileSAAver awards begin with as low as 5,000 miles one-way within North America. However, such low-level seats can be hard to come by unless the traveler books their ticket on off-peak dates. Beware that you might have to part with 12,500 miles or more when traveling during peak hours for main cabin flights.
Paying for even the regular business class will require more miles. Upgrades for domestic flights commence at 15,500 miles per way, wherever the service is offered. Cruising in a lie-flat business class to Hawaii, Europe, or Asia may entail a round trip of anything above 50,000 miles. These high redemption rates are traditionally considered to be of significantly lesser value as compared to what is available in many countries’ programs.
Of course, America also allows the use of the same miles for free vacations, accommodations, and the rental of cars, among others. Nevertheless, most other airline programs include the same or similar choices at comparable or lower prices. Nothing is especially compelling.
Elite Status Perks
The second is that any good rewards program must have elite status perks. American offers four elite tiers: The different tiers are: Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum. Several privileges accompany the obtainment of a higher status, such as free checked luggage, priority check-in, access to airport lounges, and additional points earned.
Even moving up to the next class of service with miles and copays is also easier for elites. Moreover, free visits are allowed for Golds and above; the companion must be from the same originating flight. There are even Exec Plats that are offered free companion certificates for life.
There is always flexibility to change the flight on the same day for free, which is a special privilege that comes with the Exec Platinum membership. This can also be very useful for making changes on the fly without the costs involved in fixing them.
In total, American provides elite bonuses that fit well into an industry standard for what is expected from a top-tier carrier. As always, nothing mind-blowing when compared to Delta's or United’s program, but some added perks.
Partner Redemptions
Where the American Airlines rewards can be most beneficial is in the redemption of the miles on partner airlines internationally. Oneworld Alliance has a total of over a dozen first-string global carriers, which is made possible by joint ventures.
One enormous opportunity to accumulate AAdvantage miles is to utilize them to secure premium cabin redemptions on Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific. It is proud to report that it is often possible to obtain business or first-class tickets for less than 100,000 round-trip miles to Asia. This maximizes the redemption value since paid tickets, which are usually priced at $5,000+, are being offered.
Booking with miles for Etihad Apartments, Qatar Qsuites or Flagship First on British Airways is cheaper than what those loyalty programs cost to their members. It would be even better if Americans were able to take advantage of partners.
Credit Card Perks
Finally, two Citi Group credit card brands, namely Citi and Barclays, partnered with American to launch co-branded credit cards. Separating them, there is a choice of seven cards constructed specifically for the occasional traveler, the professional business or corporate traveler, and the small business owner. Many offer sign-up bonuses of hundreds of thousands of miles, which the majority of frequent flyers can acquire in a short time.
Current card privileges include free check-ins and early boarding, companion certificates, and free flights on your membership anniversary, to name but a few. They also get up to $100 in statement credits towards airline fees each year, plus some gear cards do a refund of Global Entry/TSA PreCheck. Envelope credit card overall favorable shift.
The Verdict
And that brings us to the final question: the verdict. Is there truth to the fact that AAdvantage provides good rewards that can be enjoyed by loyalty members?
Redemption values, however, are relatively mediocre at their best, particularly in the premium cabin for U. S. domestic flights. We’re talking about getting some cheap coach fares here, and yes, AAdvantage is just great for that. However, as a rule, you can not get too much value out of American miles if you do not operate on their airline.
Nevertheless, the ability to book international premium cabin awards on partners like Cathay, Japan Airlines, and Etihad is much greater. It is also true that America enables what its global partners offer. Also, there are a lot of strategies that can be helpful to earn miles as fast as possible with the help of credit card rewards and bonuses.
Thus, it may be seen that while American Advantage may not be at the top of the league in terms of absolute top-value redemption, the program does provide some reasonable value for redeeming options. Qualitative perks like global partner awards, better domestic flights, and credit card privileges do bring American Airlines rewards to the passing grade.
